{"id":24732,"date":"2022-11-22T09:26:09","date_gmt":"2022-11-22T14:26:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/?p=24732"},"modified":"2022-11-22T13:02:42","modified_gmt":"2022-11-22T18:02:42","slug":"how-to-troubleshoot-server-actions-in-room-alert-manager","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/24732\/how-to-troubleshoot-server-actions-in-room-alert-manager\/","title":{"rendered":"How To Troubleshoot Server Actions In Room Alert Manager"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This FAQ walks you through various troubleshooting steps that you may take if Room Alert Manager is unable to <a href=\"https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/24711\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">connect and send a command to a target server<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">It&#8217;s best to begin troubleshooting with a manual test through Windows Command Prompt.<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"su-accordion su-u-trim\">\n\n\n<div class=\"su-spoiler su-spoiler-style-fancy su-spoiler-icon-plus su-spoiler-closed\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\" data-anchor-in-url=\"no\"><div class=\"su-spoiler-title\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"su-spoiler-icon\"><\/span>Perform a manual test<\/div><div class=\"su-spoiler-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Follow these steps to manually test the SSH connection:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>On Room Alert Manager&#8217;s host system, open a command prompt window as an administrator. You may find it at the following path: <em>Start&#8211;&gt; All Programs&#8211;&gt; Windows System (or Accessories)&#8211;&gt; Command Prompt<\/em><\/li><li>Then, in the command prompt window, run this command: <code>ssh [username@target IP or hostname]<\/code><br><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"979\" height=\"148\" class=\"wp-image-25060\" style=\"width: 700px;\" src=\"https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/cmd_ssh_itmgr.png\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/cmd_ssh_itmgr.png 979w, https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/cmd_ssh_itmgr-300x45.png 300w, https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/cmd_ssh_itmgr-768x116.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 979px) 100vw, 979px\" \/><\/li><li>You should be able to connect to the target system <strong>without needing to enter the user&#8217;s password<\/strong>. file must be stored in the correct location with the proper file name &amp; permissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The file name &amp; location depends on whether the user account is a member of the local administrators group or a standard user account.<ul><li>For a <em>standard user<\/em>, the <strong>authorized_keys<\/strong> file is located in the<strong> .ssh<\/strong> folder of the user&#8217;s directory.<br><em>On Windows systems, the path is C:\\Users\\UserName\\.ssh\\authorized_keys<\/em><\/li><li>For an <em>admin user<\/em>, the <strong>administrators_authorized_keys<\/strong> file is located in the system&#8217;s main<strong> ssh<\/strong> directory.<br><em>On Windows systems, the path is C:\\ProgramData\\ssh\\administrators_authorized_keys<\/em><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Only the local system and administrators security group should have permissions to access the <em>administrators_authorized_keys<\/em> file.<ul><li>The example below shows the permissions of the file on our Windows system.<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"774\" height=\"415\" class=\"wp-image-25043\" style=\"width: 550px;\" src=\"https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/SecuritySettings_AdminAuthKeys.png\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/SecuritySettings_AdminAuthKeys.png 774w, https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/SecuritySettings_AdminAuthKeys-300x161.png 300w, https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/SecuritySettings_AdminAuthKeys-768x412.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 774px) 100vw, 774px\" \/><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/div><\/div> <div class=\"su-spoiler su-spoiler-style-fancy su-spoiler-icon-plus su-spoiler-closed\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\" data-anchor-in-url=\"no\"><div class=\"su-spoiler-title\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"su-spoiler-icon\"><\/span>Check Your SSH Configuration Settings<\/div><div class=\"su-spoiler-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Open the sshd configuration file in a text editor, such as Notepad.<ul><li>For our example, we&#8217;re opening the file located at <em>C:\\ProgramData\\ssh\\<strong>sshd_config<\/strong><\/em> in a text editor.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Locate the <em>Authentication <\/em>settings, and make sure public key authentication is enabled.<ul><li>In our example, we needed to uncomment the line &#8220;PubkeyAuthentication&#8221; and set it to <strong>yes<\/strong>.<br><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"873\" height=\"305\" class=\"wp-image-25046\" style=\"width: 600px;\" src=\"https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/sshd_config_pubkey.png\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/sshd_config_pubkey.png 873w, https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/sshd_config_pubkey-300x105.png 300w, https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/sshd_config_pubkey-768x268.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 873px) 100vw, 873px\" \/><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Restart the SSH Server daemon to apply the change.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n<\/div><\/div> <div class=\"su-spoiler su-spoiler-style-fancy su-spoiler-icon-plus su-spoiler-closed\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\" data-anchor-in-url=\"no\"><div class=\"su-spoiler-title\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"su-spoiler-icon\"><\/span>Check Your Firewall Rules<\/div><div class=\"su-spoiler-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Ensure that local anti-spyware and anti-virus programs&nbsp;on both the target computer and Room Alert Manager\u2019s host system allow&nbsp;SSH connections.<\/li><li>Ensure that the firewall on the target system allows incoming remote SSH connections via TCP Port 22 (or whatever custom port you may be using).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<\/div><\/div> <div class=\"su-spoiler su-spoiler-style-fancy su-spoiler-icon-plus su-spoiler-closed\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\" data-anchor-in-url=\"no\"><div class=\"su-spoiler-title\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"su-spoiler-icon\"><\/span>Review Your SSH Logs<\/div><div class=\"su-spoiler-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n\n\n\n<p>OpenSSH includes log files that may offer additional clues\u2014or even specific suggestions\u2014for troubleshooting. Debugging can be enabled at multiple levels in order to print additional information to the log files. For more information, please see this Wikibooks entry: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikibooks.org\/wiki\/OpenSSH\/Logging_and_Troubleshooting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OpenSSH\/Logging and Troubleshooting<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, this debug line in our log shows that we need to adjust the user permissions on our <em>administrators_authorized_keys<\/em> file.<br><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"873\" height=\"250\" class=\"wp-image-25037\" style=\"width: 600px;\" src=\"https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/sshd_logs.png\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/sshd_logs.png 873w, https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/sshd_logs-300x86.png 300w, https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/sshd_logs-768x220.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 873px) 100vw, 873px\" \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To get the debugging lines to print in our log, we simply adjusted the <em>#Logging<\/em> settings within our sshd_config file.<br><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"874\" height=\"354\" class=\"wp-image-25038\" style=\"width: 600px;\" src=\"https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/sshd_config.png\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/sshd_config.png 874w, https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/sshd_config-300x122.png 300w, https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/sshd_config-768x311.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 874px) 100vw, 874px\" \/><\/p>\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If Room Alert Manager can only <em>sometimes <\/em>connect to the target server, we recommend the following:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"su-accordion su-u-trim\">\n\n\n<div class=\"su-spoiler su-spoiler-style-fancy su-spoiler-icon-plus su-spoiler-closed\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\" data-anchor-in-url=\"no\"><div class=\"su-spoiler-title\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"su-spoiler-icon\"><\/span>Check Your OpenSSH Server Startup Setting<\/div><div class=\"su-spoiler-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n\n\n\n<p>On the target system, the sshd service should be set to startup automatically. These instructions show you how to do that on Windows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Open Windows Services. &nbsp;You may find it at the following path:&nbsp;<strong>Start<\/strong>\u2013&gt;&nbsp;<strong>Control Panel<\/strong>\u2013&gt;&nbsp;<strong>Administrative Tools<\/strong>\u2013&gt;&nbsp;<strong>Services<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Right-click on <strong>OpenSSH SSH Server<\/strong> in the list of programs, and then select <strong>Properties<\/strong>.<br><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"863\" height=\"470\" class=\"wp-image-25056\" style=\"width: 550px;\" src=\"https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/SSHServer_Properties.png\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/SSHServer_Properties.png 863w, https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/SSHServer_Properties-300x163.png 300w, https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/SSHServer_Properties-768x418.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 863px) 100vw, 863px\" \/><\/li><li>In the service properties window, make sure <em>Startup type<\/em> is set to <strong>Automatic<\/strong>.<br><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"406\" height=\"468\" class=\"wp-image-25057\" style=\"width: 350px;\" src=\"https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/SSHServer_Properties_Startup.png\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/SSHServer_Properties_Startup.png 406w, https:\/\/avtech.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/SSHServer_Properties_Startup-260x300.png 260w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 406px) 100vw, 406px\" \/><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If Room Alert Manager is able to connect to the target system, but shutdown\/reboot commands fail, we recommend the following:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"su-accordion su-u-trim\">\n\n\n<div class=\"su-spoiler su-spoiler-style-fancy su-spoiler-icon-plus su-spoiler-closed\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\" data-anchor-in-url=\"no\"><div class=\"su-spoiler-title\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"su-spoiler-icon\"><\/span>Check Your User Permissions<\/div><div class=\"su-spoiler-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n\n\n\n<p>Use an administrator user on the target server. If the target server is a Mac or Linux, you&#8217;ll need to <strong>enable sudo without a password<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can do this by editing the admin group permissions within the &#8216;\/etc\/sudoers&#8217; file so that the user permissions are: <code>ALL = (ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL<\/code>. If you don&#8217;t wish to grant the user full-access, you may configure limited access to only execute certain commands without a password.
