If you’re using an Axis camera with Room Alert Manager, you may capture images from the camera in response to alert conditions. You may choose to email the images to your notifications groups, offering a quick visual check of your facility.

Before you begin:

First, discover your Axis camera. This FAQ shows you how: How To Discover Axis Cameras In Room Alert Manager.

Please follow these instructions to set up an Image Capture Action:

  1. Begin configuring your alert in Room Alert Manager. This FAQ shows you how: How To Create Alerts In Room Alert Manager.
    • Stop when you reach “Step 3: Add actions to your alert.”
  2. In the Then… section of your new alert, select Image Capture to add an Image Capture action.
  3. In the Image Capture Action form, select the camera(s) you’d like to capture images from.
  4. (Optional) You may configure the action to repeat and/or associate the action with a Quiet Time schedule.
  5. In the Send images to… field, select the notification group(s) that you’d like to send the images to.

Captured images only get attached to Email notifications. The images are attached as JPG files.

If your Notification Group includes other types of notifications (such as in-app messages, email-to-SMS messages, or text messages via SMS modem), the notifications will simply include the name of the alert and the number of images that were captured (but no JPG file).

  1. Image Capture messages are only sent when an alert is triggered (or as a repeat action while an alert remain triggered.) Images are not captured or sent when an alert clears.
    • For this reason, you may wish to add an additional notification action to your alert, so that you get notified when the alert clears.
  2. When you’re done configuring your alert, select Save Changes.

In Room Alert Manager, there are two types of Axis camera settings that you may configure:

Camera Instance SettingsGlobal Axis Settings

Follow these instructions to update a previously-discovered camera’s discovery settings (HTTP/HTTPS protocol & port):

  1. Open Room Alert Manager in your web browser.
  2. In order to configure camera instance settings in Room Alert Manager, you must log in as either an admin-level user or a manager-level user with access to the camera through a Device Group.
  3. Select Devices –> Axis Cameras in the navigation bar to the left to open the Axis Cameras inventory list.
  4. Next, select the camera you wish to update.
  5. The camera’s details page will open to the Live tab by default.
  6. Select the Settings tab. Here, you may view and edit the following settings:
    • Motion Event Timeout
      • The amount of time after receiving a camera image to consider motion no longer detected.
      • The default is 30 seconds.
    • Minimum Image Interval
      • The minimum time between each recorded image.
      • The default is 1 second.
    • URL Settings
      • The protocol and port for API interactions with the camera.
      • These settings were chosen during the initial camera discovery scan.
  7. After you are done editing these settings, select Save Changes at the bottom of the page.

Follow these instructions to configure scan intervals, scan timeouts, and missed scan thresholds for all Axis cameras.

  1. Open Room Alert Manager in your web browser.
  2. In order to configure Axis Discovery Settings in Room Alert Manager, you must log in as an admin-level user.
  3. Select Settings –> Discovery in the navigation bar to the left. Then select the Axis Discovery tab.
  4. Here, you may view and edit the following settings:
    • Discovery Scan Interval
      • This interval controls how frequently Room Alert Manager scans the previously saved IP addresses for Axis cameras.
      • The default is 30 seconds.
    • Scan Timeout
      • This value determines how many seconds Room Alert Manager waits after a scan for a response from the camera.
      • The default is 20 seconds.
    • Missed Scan Threshold
      • This value determines the number of scans it takes for Room Alert Manager to consider a previously discovered camera as no longer discovered.
      • The default is 3 scans.
  5. After you are done editing these settings, select Save Changes at the bottom of the page.

In order for Room Alert Manager to alert you when your Axis camera detects motion, you must first configure your camera to notify Room Alert Manager.

Once you’ve configured your camera with a motion event, your camera will send notifications to Room Alert Manager over HTTP port 9393 when it detects motion.

Before you start

Check your camera's firmware version.

Room Alert Manager supports Axis network cameras running firmware version 6 or higher.

Follow the instructions in this FAQ to find your camera’s firmware version: Where To Find The Firmware Version Of Your Axis Camera.

Configuring a Motion Event on an Axis Camera

Step 1: Configure a Recipient / Event Server.
Current Web InterfaceOld Web Interface
  1. Open your camera’s web interface, and then click Settings in the bottom right corner of the screen.
  2. In the Settings tray that opens, navigate to the System tab, and then click Events.
  3. In the window that opens, select Recipients.
  4. Select + to add your first recipient. Here you’re going to enter your instance of Room Alert Manager to receive HTTP notifications:
    • In Name, enter a name for your recipient. In our example, we’re entering “RA 192.168.123.45.”
    • In Type, select HTTP from the drop-down menu.
    • In URL, enter the following (do not include the square brackets in your URL) :
      http://[Room Alert Manager's Host IP Address]:[Room Alert Manager's web port]/ram/api/v1/axisdevice/push/[Camera_MAC]
      • In our example, Room Alert Manager’s host system is 192.168.123.45, and the service is using the default web port, 9393: http://192.168.123.45:9393/ram/api/v1/axisdevice/push/AA:BB:CC:D3:E4:F5
  5. You may leave the login credentials blank.
  6. Select Test to test the connection.
    • You should see a Connection successful message. Select OK to dismiss it.
    • If your connection test fails, you may need to open inbound TCP port 9393 in the firewall on Room Alert Manager’s host system.
    • Finally, select Save to save your new recipient.
    1. With your camera’s web interface open to the Setup page, select Events in the navigation bar to the left.
    2. In the window that opens, select Recipients.
    3. Select Add. Here you’re going to enter your instance of Room Alert Manager to receive HTTP notifications:

      • Finally, select OK to save your new recipient.
    Step 2: Configure Video Motion Detection settings / a Motion Detection window.

    You may configure Axis Video Motion Detection application settings or simply leave them at defaults. To view or configure them:

    1. With your camera’s web interface, navigate to Apps (or Applications).
    2. The find Axis Video Motion Detection. Click it to access available settings.
    3. For information about the settings that are available, please see the Video Motion Detection manual on Axis’ website here: Axis Video Motion Detection (Axis website).
    4. If you make any changes, be sure to select Save.
    5. Select Close to dismiss the window.
    Step 3: Configure Your Action Rule / Event Type.
    Current Web InterfaceOld Web Interface
    1. Open your camera’s web interface, and then click Settings in the bottom right corner of the screen.
    2. In the Settings tray that opens, navigate to the System tab, and then click Events.
    3. In the window that opens, select Rules.
    4. Select + to add your first rule.
    5. Make sure Use this rule is selected (enabled).
    6. In Name, enter a name for the rule. We’re calling ours ‘Notify RA Manager.’
    7. In Wait between actions, you may leave the default, 00:00:00.
    8. In Condition, select VMD 4: Any Profile (or VMD: Profile X if there’s a specific profile you’d like to use).
    9. You may leave the checkboxes Invert this condition and Use this condition as a trigger at the default, unchecked.
    10. In the Action drop-down menu, select Send images through HTTP (or HTTPS if required).
    11. If you only have one recipient, it will be selected automatically.
      • Otherwise, in the drop-down menu, choose the recipient you made earlier.
    12. You may leave the default selections for Image Frequency, Prebuffer, Postbuffer, Maximum Images, Maximum Sequence Number, and CGI Parameters, or adjust these settings as desired.
    13. You may leave Create folder empty, and keep the default selections in Filename.
    14. Then select Save to save your new rule.
    1. With your camera’s web interface open to the Setup page, navigate to EventsAction Rules  in the navigation bar to the left.
    2. In the window that appears, select Add.
    3. In the General section, make sure Enable rule is selected.
    4. In Name, enter a name for the rule. We’re calling ours ‘Notify RA Manager.’
    5. In Trigger, select Applications.
    6. Leave Start condition only at the default, unchecked.
    7. In the drop down-menu that appears, select VMD 4 or VideoMotionDetection depending on which Video Motion Detection version you have installed.
    8. In Active (or Motion Detected), leave the default, Yes, selected.
    9. In Schedule, select Always (No Schedule).
    10. Leave Additional conditions blank, which is the default.
    11. In Wait at least, you may leave the default, 00:00:00.
    12. In Type, select Send Images.
    13. In Stream profile, select JPEG.
    14. You may leave the default selections in Image frequency, Duration, and Limit, or adjust these settings as desired.
    15. In the Recipient drop-down menu, select the recipient you made earlier.
    16. You may leave Create folder empty, and keep the default selections in Base file name.
    17. Then select OK to save your new rule.

    Discover your Axis network cameras in Room Alert Manager in order start capturing images and identifying motion.

    By default, Axis cameras obtain an IP address by DHCP.

    Follow the instructions below to discover your camera in Room Alert Manager.

    1. First open Room Alert Manager’s web interface.
    2. In order to perform Axis camera discovery scans, you must log in to Room Alert Manager as an admin-level user.
    3. In Room Alert Manager’s interface, navigate to Devices –> Axis Cameras.
    4. Then select the Add Cameras button in the AXIS Cameras Inventory page.
    5. This opens the Scan for New AXIS Cameras window, shown below.

      Here, you can scan for individual and/or range of IP addresses. Add as many IP addresses / ranges to the scan as you’d like.
    6. For each IP address / range that you wish to scan…
      • In the first dropdown menu, select Range to scan a range of IP addresses or select Single to scan one IP address.
      • In the next dropdown menu, select either http or https, depending on the camera’s configured connection policy.
      • Then enter the IP address (or range) that you wish to scan.
      • In port, you may leave the default 80 (or 443 for HTTPS), or enter a different web port that your camera is configured to use.
      • When you’re done, select Add to Scan.
    7. The added IP address / range gets listed above. You may add as many additional scans to the list as you’d like.
      • In our example, we’re just going to scan one IP range.
    8. Then select Start Scan.
    9. Room Alert Manager will scan for Axis cameras on your network using the port(s) set in Step 6.
    10. Upon discovering an Axis camera, Room Alert Manager automatically checks if it’s using default credentials.
      • Our scan found two Axis cameras. The first is configured with custom credentials. Therefore, its Username and Password fields are empty.
      • The second camera is using default credentials. Therefore, Room Alert Manager automatically populated the default Username and Password and added the camera for us.
    11. Valid credentials must be saved before adding Axis cameras to your Inventory list.
      • For the camera using custom credentials, we need to enter its Username and Password, and then select Test to check that the credentials are valid.
      • If Room Alert Manager is able to successfully connect to the camera with the entered credentials, the +Add button will appear. Select this button to add the camera to your Inventory.
    12. After you’ve added all desired cameras to your Inventory, select Done to close the window.
    13. The cameras will now appear in your list.

    You may find the firmware version of your Axis camera on its web interface, either in the Setup→Basic Setup page (v6.x.x and below) or the Help→About page (v7.x.x. and above).

    You may need logs from your Axis camera to troubleshoot an issue in your RoomAlert.com account or the Device ManageR software.

    To retrieve the logs, follow the instructions below:

    Step 1: Discover your Axis camera.

    This FAQ shows you a few different methods to find the camera’s IP address: How To Discover Your Axis Camera.

    Step 2: Open your camera’s web interface.

    You may open your camera’s web interface in the following ways:

    – Type the camera’s IP address directly into your browser’s address bar.

    – Open the Devices tab of your RoomAlert.com account, select your camera and then select the Device Interface button.

    – Use the manufacturer’s software from https://www.axis.com/Axis IP Utility or Axis Device Manager.

    – If you are already using AVTECH’s Device ManageR software, select your camera from your Discovered Devices list and then select Open Web.

    Step 3: Get the application log(s) and camera server report.

    For issues in RoomAlert.com, get these files:

    Axis Video Motion Detection application log

    GoToMyDevices Image Push application log

    – Server Report

    For issues in Device ManageR, get these files:

    Axis Video Motion Detection application log

    – Server Report

     

    Follow the instructions below to navigate to the log(s) and server report. How you get to them depends on your camera’s firmware version range.

    v6.x.x and lower camera firmwarev7.x.x and higher camera firmware

    If you camera is v6.x.x or below, you’ll see Live View | Setup | Help on the right side of the banner at the top of the screen.

    Get the application log(s)

    Follow these steps to get the log(s):

    1. In your Axis camera’s web interface, select Setup in the top right of the page that opens.

    2. Select Applications in the navigation bar to the left.

    3. Under Installed Applications, highlight the application you need the log for by clicking on it once.

    4. Select Log.

    5. The log will appear in a pop-up window. Right-click inside that window and select Save as.

    6. Save the log as a .txt (text) file somewhere you can easily find.

    7. Attach the log(s) to an email to Support@AVTECH.com.

    Get the server report

    Follow these steps to get the server report:

    1. In your Axis camera’s web interface, select Setup in the top right of the page.

    2. In the navigation bar to the left, navigate to System Options→ SupportLogs & Reports.

    3. In the Logs & Reports page, select Download Server Report. (You may leave Include snapshot from Live View blank.)

    4. A .zip file with the report will download to your computer, typically to your computer’s Downloads folder.

    5. Attach that .zip file to an email to Support@AVTECH.com.

    If you camera is v7.x.x or above, you’ll see 3 icons on the right side of the banner at the top of the screen.

    Get the application log(s)

    Follow these steps to get the log(s):

    1. In your Axis camera’s web interface, select Settings in the lower right corner of the screen.

    2. In the navigation menu at the bottom of the screen, select Apps.

    4. Locate the Controls panel in the upper half of the screen. You may have to scroll to find it.

    5. In Controls, select Application log.

    8. Attach the log(s) to an email to Support@AVTECH.com.

    Get the server report

    Follow these steps to get the server report:

    1. In your Axis camera’s web interface, select Settings in the lower right corner of the screen.

    2. In the navigation menu at the bottom of the screen, select System.

    3. In the System menu at the bottom of the screen, select Maintenance. You may need to use the right/left arrows to find it.

    4. Locate the Reports panel in the top half of the screen. You may have to scroll to find it.

    5. In the Reports panel, select Download the server report.

    6. A .zip file with the report will download to your computer, typically to your computer’s Downloads folder.

    7. Attach that .zip file to an email to Support@AVTECH.com.

    Discovering Your Axis Camera With Axis Software

    If you intend to use your compatible Axis camera with your Room Alert Account at RoomAlert.com, you may wish initially to discover it using the manufacturer’s software, either the Axis IP Utility or Axis Camera Management.

    Axis IP Utility

    The Axis IP Utility automatically discovers your Axis cameras. You may also use it to assign a static IP to your camera if you wish.

    Axis Camera Management

    The Axis Camera Management software discovers your Axis cameras through its Add Devices feature. You may also use the program to assign a static IP to your camera and to upgrade its firmware.

    Discovering Your Axis Camera With Your Room Alert Account

    You may find the unit’s IP address in your Room Alert Account in the Device Details page. To navigate to the camera’s Device Details page, select Devices in the navigation bar to the left in your Room Alert Account, and then select your camera from the device list.

    You may find the unit’s IP address listed under Local IP.

    Please note that before your compatible Axis camera can appear in your Room Alert Account, you must take some preparatory steps in the order shown below:

    1. Check that it is compatible using this FAQ: List Of Axis Cameras Compatible With RoomAlert.com.

    2. Upload the required firmware and applications to your compatible camera. This FAQ shows you how: How To Upload Required Software To Your RoomAlert.com-Compatible Axis Camera. (This software allows your device to push data to RoomAlert.com).

    Discovering Your Axis Camera With AVTECH’s Device ManageR (Legacy)

    In order for your compatible Axis camera to push data and images to your Room Alert Account, it must have the following installed:

    – Axis camera firmware minimum version 5.60; maximum version 7.x. (8.x+ is not currently compatible.)

    – Axis’ Video Motion Detection 3 application. (VMD 4 is not currently compatible.)

    – AVTECH’s GoToMyDevices Image Push application.

    Refer to our List Of Axis Cameras Compatible With RoomAlert.com to see if your camera can meet the above requirements.

    If you haven’t yet discovered your compatible Axis camera, you may make the initial discovery with AVTECH’s Room Alert Manager software or with the manufacturer’s software, Axis IP Utility or Axis Camera Management. Please see this FAQ for more information: How To Discover Your Axis Camera.

    First, check your Axis camera firmware.Next, install Axis Video Motion Detection 3.Finally, install AVTECH's Image Push Application

    Your firmware must be between 5.60 and 7.x (inclusive). Version 8.x is not currently compatible.

    1. Check your camera's firmware version.

    Follow the instructions in this FAQ to find your camera’s firmware version: Where To Find The Firmware Version Of Your Axis Camera.

    2: Install firmware between version 5.60 and 7.x (inclusive).

    1. Find the firmware versions available for your model on the Axis web site: Firmware (Axis web site).

    2. Choose the highest version between 5.60 and 7.x (inclusive).

    3. Install that version on your camera using the unit’s web interface (HTTP) or Axis Camera Management software. The instructions on the Axis web site show you how:  How to upgrade… (Axis web site).

    Next, install Axis Video Motion Detection 3 .

    Your camera must have Video Motion Detection (VMD) 3.x installed. VMD 4 (or 2) is not compatible with our image push application.

    1. Check your VMD version.

    Once you’ve updated your compatible Axis camera to a version between 5.60 and 7.x, check to see what version of VMD is installed.

    1. Select Setup at the top of the page of your camera’s web interface.

    2. Select Applications from the navigation bar to the left.

    3. Note the AXIS Video Motion Detection version in Installed Applications.

    2. Download and install VMD 3.

    If you don’t see VMD 3 in Applications, follow these steps to get it:

    1. Navigate to the Axis Video Motion Detection – Download page in your web browser at Axis.com.

    2.  Scroll down to the Download Video Motion Detection 3 section in that page and select the yellow Download button.

    3. When the Axis_Video_Motion_Detection_3.eap file finishes downloading, save it somewhere you can easily find.

    4. In your camera’s web interface, under Upload Application, select Browse (or Choose File).

    5. In the window that opens, navigate to the Axis_Video_Motion_Detection_3.eap file and double-click on it to load it.

    6. Then, in Upload Application, select Upload Package.

    7. AXIS Video Motion Detection (version 3.x) should now appear in your Installed Applications list.

    3. Remove other versions of VMD.

    If you have VMD versions other than 3 in Applications, remove them.

    1. Highlight Axis Video Motion Detection 4 (or Axis Video Motion Detection 2) by clicking on it once.

    2. Select Remove.

    4. Start VMD 3.

    Highlight AXIS Video Motion Detection 3 by clicking on it once and then select Start to start the application. (It will immediately go into the Idle state after you start it.)

    Finally, install AVTECH’s Image Push Application.

    In order to have access to the image push application, you must have a Room Alert Account at the Professional level or higher. Please see this FAQ for account upgrade instructions: How To Upgrade Your RoomAlert.com Account.

    1. Download GoToMyDevices Image Push application.

    1. Log in to your Professional (or higher) account at RoomAlert.com.

    2. Select Downloads in the navigation bar to the left.

    3. Scroll down to the Axis Cameras section and select the green Download button.

    4. When the GTMDImagePush.zip folder finishes downloading, save it somewhere you can easily find.

    2. Determine which .eap file you need.

    1. Navigate to the file you just downloaded and extract its contents using a compression program like 7-Zip, WinZip or WinRar.

    2. Open the extracted folder, in which you’ll find 4 .eap files. (“x_x” stands for the version number.)

    3. Determine which file you need for your camera by referring to this chart: List Of Axis Cameras Compatible With RoomAlert.com.

    3. Upload GoToMyDevices Image Push firmware to your compatible Axis camera.

    1. In your camera’s web interface, select Setup in the navigation bar at the top of the page.

    2. Then select Applications in the navigation bar to the left.

    3. In Upload Application, select Browse (or Choose File).

    4. In the window that opens, navigate to the correct .eap file and double-click on it to load it.

    5. Then, in Upload Application, select Upload Package.

    6. You should then see GoToMyDevices Image Push listed in your Installed Applications list. Select it by clicking on it once.

    7. Then select Start to start the GoToMyDevices Image Push application.

    8. You’ll see the status for both the Axis Video Motion Detection and GoToMyDevices Image Push change to Running.

    Once you have VMD 3 and GoToMyDevices Image Push running, your camera will push its first status update to your Room Alert Account. (Note that status updates do not include images.)
